This walkthorugh contains instructions on how to determine which journals that J.L. Bedsole Library has available, physically on the shelves and also which journals we have access to electronically.

Physical Journals

Step 1: Go to the UM Journals link

On the library homepage, click the text link under the "Find" column entitled, "UM Journals."

If you are accessing the collection from off campus, you will be prompted for a username and password. The username is your student ID number and the password is the universal PIN number given out in information literacy instruction sessions. Call or email the library if you do not know the PIN.

Step 2: Select a Subject

You will be directed a the Periodical Holdings screen. You have the option of viewing the library's journals holdings alphabetically (organized by the first letter of the journal title) or by subject. Generally, since most people do not know what they are looking for, selecting a subject is best. Click the gray arrow on the dropdown box labeled, "Select a Subject." Chose an area you are interested in.

Step 3: Note the Holdings

From there, you will be directed to a table showing all journals, pertaining to the subject you chose, that Bedsole Library has on its shelves. The table displays the journal title, the library holdings and the department or subject area that the journal is classified under.

The holdings column tells you which volumes/issues of the particular journal title that the library has. These holdings will be in paper, microfiche or microfilm. "Paper" simply means physical copies, printed on paper. Microfiche and microfilm are small scans of those physical copies that are placed on a film strip or reel. These formats require the use of a special piece of equipment to read, and, if the journal you need is contained on microfiche or microfilm, please ask a library staff member to help you access it.

Electronic Jorunals

Step 1: Go to the Electronic Journals link

On the library homepage, click the text link under the "Find" column entitled, "Electronic Journals."

If you are accessing the collection from off campus, you will be prompted for a username and password. The username is your student ID number and the password is the universal PIN number given out in information literacy instruction sessions. Call or email the library if you do not know the PIN.

Step 2: Select a Subject

You will be directed to the interface of a program called "A to Z." This is an extremely useful tool for navigating the electronic collection. If you are simply trying to determine which journals Bedsole Library has access to, click the "Subjects" tab, located to the right of the already-selected "Titles" tab.

You will be directed to a dropdown box that is similar to the one encountered in Step 2 of the Physical Journals walkthrough. Click the gray arrow and scroll through the list to find the appropriate subject.

The number next to the subject term indicates how many unique electronic journal titles you can access through J.L. Bedsole. When you choose a subject, you will be directed to a hierarchical bullet list. With so many journal title falling under a general subject area (i.e., Education), A to Z breaks them down further by grouping them according to subclass, or a specific part of the general subject area (i.e. History of Education is a subclass of Education). Click on the subclass of journal titles you'd like to explore.

Step 3: Select a Journal

You will be directed to an alphabetically organized list of titles that are classified under the specific sublcass you chose. You can scroll through the list or jump to a particular page. The screen will look like this:

external image journals8.png

The title of the journal is bolded. The maroon text links are electronic databases that contain scanned copies of issues of the journal title. These links are what you click on in order to get to the journal. Consider the journal title (the bold text) as a particular product you want to buy and the database title (the link) as a particular store or vendor you want to get it from. All you are doing when you click on link x under the title you want instead of link y is choosing to get sugar from Wal-Mart instead of Bruno's.

To the right of the text link, there are dates listed in gray. These dates refer to the dates of the journal you will access to through a particular vendor. So, look at American Educational History Journal. The first link under that title is to the Academic OneFile database. We see "2007 - present" written beside the link. This means that Academic OneFile only has electronic copies of the American Educational History Journal dating back to January 2007. Be mindful of the dates listed if you are looking for a specific article. You may see that some journal titles are "embargoed" for a certain period of time. If a title has a one year embargo, then Bedsole Library has electronic access to all issues from the given start date through one year ago from the day you are browsing.

Once you select a database link for the journal title you'd like to browse, you will be directed to a screen that may look like this:

From here, you can browse the article in the journal at your leisure. Select the year you'd like to look through, and then select the an issue.
