In your web browser, type in the following URL: http://library.umobile.edu. Once you press enter, you should be directed to the library's website, which looks like this:
You can also get to the site from both MyUM and the University of Mobile homepage. In MyUM, the link to the library page is the final item of the list of links in the far right column:
On the University of Mobile homepage, scroll down to the bottom of the page. In the middle of the footer, you will notice a list of Quick Links. The library website's link is the first on this list:
Step 2: Click on the UM Catalog
Once you have reached the library's website, click the first link under the Find column entitled UM Catalog:
After clicking this link, you will be directed to the online public access catalog (OPAC) or, simply the catalog for the short. The catalog's interface looks like this:
Step 3: Perform A Search
Now that you are in the catalog, you can perform a search for a book. Most people perform a keyword search, which searches several areas of a book record for the terms you type into the search box; however you can also search by a book title, author, subject or even ISBN (international standard book number). Type your search term(s) into the search box located between the phrase "the word(s)" and the blue Search button. To perform your search, click this blue search button. WARNING: the catalog is sensitive to spelling! At times, it may appear that the library doesn't have any books on "Shakespeere," but double check Google, a dictionary or some other resource which has the correct spelling of your search term(s).
Step 4: Locate the Call Number
When you've diced what kind of search you're going to perform and selected your search term(s), click the blue Search button to perform your search and retrieve the library's relevant records. You will be directed to the search retrieval screen, which has an interface that looks like this:
Say the first item in the pictured retrieval list is what you are looking for. The way to go about locating the book you want involves copying down the Call Number, or the sequences of letters, numbers and periods that is displayed in each record between the book's location (i.e. "Main (2nd Floor) and its availability. The Call Number is circled in the image below:
The Call Number is your guide to locating the book on the shelf. The ends of each shelf have index cards containing the range of Call Numbers of the books on that shelf. For example, a card reading PA100 - PE505.4 contains books from the main collection with any Call Number between PA100 and PE505.4, arranged in alphabetical and numeric order. So, PC2220.66 would be on that shelf but PE600 would not be. Find the shelf whose range of Call Numbers would contain the number of the book you want. Browse the shelf until you find the Call Number of your book, and, thuis, the book itself. You can locate the Call Number of individual books by looking on their spines.
